On Being the Change You Want To See Happen in the World.

I put this up on Facebook today: (It’s interesting that I wrote this about five years ago.)

I GOT SO TIRED OF ALL THE POLITICAL AMULETS EVERYONE HAS BEEN WEARING THAT THIS WAS MY RESPONSE TO SOMETHING GOING ON IN SOMEONE’S COMMENTS. I THOUGHT I WOULD POST IT HERE.  PLEASE NO HATE MAIL. THANKS.
Okay I am going to risk this. Probably I will get a lot of people booing at me, but it is okay. I already had one person have an online melt down on me this week and turned it around. In case any one knows what I am talking about, she was having a bad day and after throwing a lot of humor her way, she actually apologized. I give her a thousand brownie points for that.
It is true that I grew up in N.Y., but here’s the deal. My parents were European. When I lived in NY I was the most shy and introverted kid on the block. I lived in MA for close to 10 yrs near Harvard where I took a lot of seminars that get you out there and for journal writing. I went to UMass for Adult Training and Development and in the 80’s really thought that communications were improving between the sexes, saw lots of top down bottom up relationships starting to happen in business, liberal was not a dirty word, it meant you fought for a lot of the values we have now, including civil rights and feminism and a whole host of other things.
I lived in Japan for ten years where I at the time talked about how much better our health care system was. I come home to press one if you are a garden variety neurotic 2 if u r schitzo 3 if u are a multiple and 4 if u are paranoid and know that we are watching you……get my drift….no bottom ups anything except beer. Now, we have instead what is best for the stock holders, hedge funds, no company or employee integrity, health care being seen as a socialist act while the rest of the world is just shaking their heads at us, and it goes on and on. In the middle of this mess, the middle class is disappearing a 100k and 250K is not middle class(only 5% of the people in this country make over 100k), while more and more jobs are sent over seas. Do you know how we look to people in other countries? Here is the kicker in the middle of what for a long time so shocked me that I felt like what planet had my plane landed on when I came back to the States (with really much regret for a long time), because in the middle of this if I try and talk about anything and try and address things I am told that I am confrontational (and it is because I am a New Yorker……duh, while people who come here from NY don’t even believe I sound like a New Yorker, and why even bring it up really….
Is anyone going to say hey you’re black….Yah I grew up Jewish and it was my religion and not my nationality (thank you very much to those who believe differently), while I don’t know how many Americans (personally I think out of fear) are close if not just as fanatical as the the Muslims who went up in arms over the movie in CA. In the bible, didn’t it say you reap what you so? How much violence is there here now? What are we teaching those overseas. What are we teaching our children with the present communication style.
Certainly nothing like have the faith that we can be received and respected and be in dialogue with each other….. I think, especially with so many families with two parents working or single parent households, we should teach morals and integrity to children in school, along with algebra and geometry to young children, and it can be done without bringing religion into it. Personally, I believe change starts with each of us, and I will stand for that till the bitter end.
If we can’t talk to each other openly and leave our religion, party, race and the rest behind, why do we expect our politicians to? Yah know, this could change if instead of worrying about aliens, conspiracy theories, if there is enough for every one and apocalypse now, we decided the buck stops here or what are we even taking political sides for?
How many of us know how to keep a conversation going with humor if needed and to listen–not hear. I’m serious, because I think these days most people are when the going gets rough the tough get going in the other direction. I don’t know the answer, but it is something we all need to talk about and think about, I sincerely believe. If young people are not taught to live passionate and creative lives where communication and dialogue is the name of the game of course they are going to resort to sex, outlandish clothing and violence.
Before any of you start bellowing at me. Think of where I am coming from. I am struggling with this every day inside myself, and recently have had some remarkable experiences. It can be done, and it might be you who is the 100th monkey…..If I have offended anyone with my honestly, think about the last time you walked away from a conversation looked down on someone else’s intellect or passed by an opportunity to make a friend because of who they were and who you think you are without really finding out and just using out dated radar. I believe this can change. I don’t remember who said “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I’m trying, so don’t shoot the messenger.
